The inter-school cross country championships are just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited to see our TAS student-athletes go head-to-head. Running is an excellent way for kids of all ages to improve their fitness and overall health while challenging themselves and building important life skills such as goal-setting, discipline and perseverance. If your child is interested in improving their cross country running, here are some tips to help them get started and continue to succeed.

Start Training Slowly & Mindfully
One of the most essential things to remember when beginning training for cross country running is to start slowly. This means helping your child gradually build up their endurance and consistency rather than speed, then encouraging them to increase the distance and intensity of their runs over time to avoid injury and fatigue.

Choose The Right Running Gear
It’s important to ensure that your child has the right running shoes and comfortable clothing to avoid discomfort and injury. Look for shoes that offer good support, cushioning and traction for better grip on different terrains while choosing moisture-wicking clothing that’s breathable, keeps them dry and is appropriate for the weather conditions.

Hydrate & Fuel Properly
Staying hydrated and making sure your child is fueling their body correctly is essential for optimal performance and recovery. Encourage your child to drink enough water and eat a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Now could be a good time to teach them about avoiding heavy or sugary foods before runs and to refuel with healthy snacks and fluids after. Practice Good Running Form
Practising proper running form is essential for success in cross-country and can help your child improve their efficiency, reduce the risk of injury and maximise their performance. Start by teaching your child to run with their head up, their shoulders relaxed, their feet landing softly and how to use their arms to help with momentum. Encourage your student athlete to breathe deeply and rhythmically to maintain a steady pace while staying relaxed and comfortable to avoid exhaustion.

Set Realistic & Motivating Goals
Setting realistic and achievable goals is crucial to help motivate your child and help them track their progress. Goals that will help your child stay engaged in their training might completing a specific distance by a certain date or improving their time on a specific route.

It’s important to remind your student athlete that progress takes time and that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the process. Have Fun
Finally, remember to have fun! Cross country running should be enjoyable, not a chore. Encourage your child to enjoy the process, focus on their personal progress rather than comparing themselves to others and make new friends at the same time. Why not find ways to make cross-country training fun for your child by going with them to explore new trails or parks, setting up mini competitions between family members or arranging for them to run with friends?

Cross country running can be a fun and rewarding sport for kids, provided they approach it with the right mindset, preparation, and discipline. By following these tips, you can help your child succeed and enjoy the sport for years to come. Happy running!
